"Some models suggest whatever percentage of the book is listened to is the percentage of the royalty that’s distributed."

Is this accurate for Spotify?

Or is it total minutes listened?

Thanks for the question CJ! From what we understand, different publishers have different models.

So MacMillan's for example, is public knowledge (was reported on in Bloomberg):

"Authors will receive a full royalty credit for each unit listened to, so long as, in aggregate, they achieve a complete listen of their work. For example, Macmillan explained, if an audiobook is 100 minutes long, a full listen could be achieved by either one Spotify subscriber listening to 100 minutes, or five customers listening to 20 minutes each."

But other models (we've heard through word of mouth) are based on the percentage of book listened to (e.g., 1/3rd equals 1/3rd of a royalty, 2/3rd equals 2/3rds of the royalty, etc.) so slightly different.
